OVERVIEW OF THE TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test is a test of international business English that is taken every year by 5 million students and business professionals in different countries around the world. The TOEIC® measures and certifies listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar proficiency in international business English. The TOEIC® is used as a certification tool in more than 5235 international companies around the world.

TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test


The TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test lasts about two hours and includes 200 multiple-choice questions The test is divided into two sections: Listening and Reading. There are 100 questions on each section.

The Listening Test
This section of the test has four separate parts and lasts 45 minutes.

The Reading Test
This section of the test has three separate parts and lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Part 1 Picture Identification

Picture Identification (10 questions)

In Part 1, you will see a selection of 10 black-and-white photographs and you will hear a series of ten recordings. For each photo you will hear four descriptive statements. You must identify the one statement that best describes what you can see in the picture.

Part 2 Question/Response

Question/Response (30 questions)

Part 2 features 30 recordings of questions and responses.
Each question is followed by three responses.
You must select the appropriate response.

Part 3 Short Conversations

Short Conversations (30 questions)

Part 3 features ten four-part conversations between two people. After listening to each conversation, you have to answer three comprehension questions. Each question has four multiple-choice answers, only one of which is correct.

Part 4 Short Talks

Short Talks (30 questions)

Part 4 presents ten recorded short talks that may include announcements, weather reports, travel advisories, etc. Students must answer three comprehension questions about each talk. Each question has four multiple-choice answers, only one of which is correct.

Part 5 Incomplete Sentences

Incomplete Sentences (40 questions)

Part 5 consists of sentences that contain a blank. You are given four possible answers to complete the sentence. You must choose the correct one.

Part 6 Text Completion

Text completion (12 questions)

Part 6 presents four texts which each contain three numbered blanks. You are given four possible answers to complete each blank. You must choose the correct one.

Part 7 Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension (48 questions)

In this section of the test, you must read several documents and answer multiple-choice comprehension questions about them. The documents are presented in two different formats:

Single passages
These present individual documents (announcements, new articles, letters, invoices, timetables, etc.) and students must answer between two and four comprehension questions on each document by choosing the best answer.

Double passages
These feature two documents that are inter-related. The first document presents information and is followed by a second document that contains a response, reaction or enquiry relating to the first one. Students must answer five questions on each of the double passages.

There are 28 questions for the single passages and 20 for the double passages.

SCORING


Scoring

Scores on the TOEIC® test are calculated by the number of correct answers on each section.

The number of correct answers is then converted into a scale score.

You are given separate scores for the Listening and Reading comprehension sections of the test.

These scores are calculated on a scale ranging from 5 to 495 points.

The total score is between 10 and 990 points.
