OVERVIEW OF THE TOEIC® Speaking and Writing Test

The TOEIC® Speaking and Writing Test is the newest addition to the TOEIC®, bringing the longstanding validity, reliability, and equity of ETS testing to the assessment of speaking and writing skills. With the addition of the Speaking and Writing Test to the Listening and Reading Test, the TOEIC® is now a full "four skills" language assessment.

OVERVIEW

The TOEIC® Speaking Test includes six different tasks
and is comprised of eleven questions that measure different aspects of your speaking ability, such as pronunciation, intonation and stress, grammar and vocabulary. The test also measures the cohesion of your
responses, and their relevance and completeness of content. The Speaking test lasts approximately 20 minutes.

The TOEIC® Writing Test includes three different tasks and is comprised of eight questions that measure different aspects of your writing ability.
The Writing test lasts approximately one hour.

Task 1 Speaking - Read a text aloud

Read a text aloud (2 questions)

You will be given two short texts of approximately seventy words each that you have to read out loud. You are given 45 seconds to prepare each text and 45 seconds to read each text out loud. The text that you will be asked to read out is usually an advertisement.

Task 2 Speaking - Describe a picture

Describe a picture (1 question)

In this task you will be asked to make an oral commentary about a picture that you will see on your screen. You should try to describe the picture in as much detail as you can but you can also add personal comments or recollections. You will have thirty seconds to prepare what you want to say about the picture and then 45 seconds to actually speak about it.

Task 3 Speaking - Respond to questions

Respond to questions (3 questions)

In this section of the test you are given a short scenario to read which describes a situation in which you are being interviewed over the phone. Once you have read the scenario and the three questions, you then hear a recording of the same three questions. You are given 15 seconds to answer the first two questions and 30 seconds to answer the third question.

Task 4 Speaking - Respond to questions using information provided

Respond to questions using information provided (3 questions)

For this task you are given 30 seconds to read a document. You then hear a recording of a voice mail message that refers to the subject of the document. The message is followed by three questions. You are given 15 seconds to respond to the first two questions and 30 seconds to respond to the third question.

Task 5 Speaking - Propose a solution

Propose a solution (1 question)

In this section you will hear a voice mail from a caller who is presenting a problem and asking you for assistance. You have 30 seconds of preparation time and then sixty seconds to record your response in which you should propose a solution to the caller’s problem.

Task 6 Speaking - Express an opinion

Express an opinion (1 question)

In this section of the test you will be presented with a question about a general topic. You are given 15 seconds to prepare your answer and then have sixty seconds to speak.

Task 1 Writing - Write a sentence based on a picture

Write a sentence based on a picture (5 questions)

In this task you will be shown a series of five pictures. Each picture is accompanied by two written words. You must write one sentence about each of the pictures including the words that are given. You may change both the form of the words and the order in which they appear. You have 8 minutes to complete this section.

Task 2 Writing - Respond to a written request

Respond to a written request (2 questions)

In this task you are asked to read and respond to two e-mails. You are given specific directions to follow for each of your responses and you have 10 minutes to read and answer each mail.

Task 3 Writing - Write an opinion essay

Write an opinion essay (1 question)

In this section of the test you are asked to write an essay of at least 300 words in response to a question. The question presents an issue or topic and asks you to give your opinion. You have 30 minutes to plan and present your answer.

SCORING


Scoring

The rating process for the TOEIC® Speaking and Writing tests takes place over ETS's Online Scoring Network, a secure Internet-based system for evaluating test-takers' responses.

Responses are sent to ETS's Online Scoring Network (OSN), where they are scored by certified ETS test raters.

Speaking Test Scores

Questions 1-9 are rated on a scale of 0-3
Questions 10-11 are rated on a scale of 0-5
Sum of all ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0-200
8 proficiency levels are provided

Writing Test Scores

Questions 1-5 are rated on a scale of 0-3
Questions 6-7 are rated on a scale of 0-4
Question 8 is rated on a scale of 0–5
Sum of all ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0-200
9 proficiency levels are provided
